One Killed, Three Injured in Car Accident
A man from Royal Palm Beach was killed recently and three others were injured in a late night car accident in Palm Beach County. According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, John Calhoun, 40, was killed while riding in the passenger seat of a car. The accident took place early Sunday morning around 4:00 a.m. at the intersection of Lake Worth Road and Nassau Road.
The police report states that Mr. Calhoun was in the passenger seat of a 2007 Mercedes being driven by his father, John Hemphill Calhoun, 75, when the accident occurred. The car was driving in the eastbound turn lane of Lake Worth Road. At the same time, a 2016 Ford Fusion being driven by Reynaldo Cortes Jr. was traveling westbound in the center lane of the same street. Mr. Calhoun Sr. attempted to turn left northbound on Nassau Road when it was struck by Mr. Cortes.
John Calhoun Jr. was airlifted to Delray Medical Center where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. His father was transported to the same hospital, and his condition remains unknown. Mr. Cortes and his passenger, Nicolas Mathias Gonzalez, were taken to Wellington Medical Center. Mr. Gonzalez suffered serious abdominal injuries, and Mr. Cortes’ injuries are unknown, as well.
The police have not stated whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident, and the investigation remains open. So far, no charges have been filed against anyone involved in the accident.
Compensation for Car Accidents
The time that it takes for a car accident to happen can be less than a split second, but the damage that is caused can be lasting. There are many costs that can be recovered following a car accident in a personal injury case, although few victims are aware of the full extent that they are owed. Insurance companies rely on this lack of information to try and settle a car accident case for far less than its full worth, but an experienced attorney can ensure that you are not taken advantage of following your accident.
The person or parties responsible for the car accident are liable for a number of costs to the victims of the crash. Compensation after a car accident can include the following:
- Present and future medical expenses
- Lost wages and impaired earning ability
- Disability payments
- Rehabilitation costs
- Pain and suffering
- Scarring and disfigurement
- Emotional distress
- Property damage
- Loss of enjoyment of life
- Loss of consortium
- Wrongful death
- Funeral expenses
…and any other cost that is reasonably related to the events that occurred in the car accident.
