Florida Bill To Address Plastic Surgery “Butcher Shops”

PlasticSurg2

A bill has been introduced in the Florida government to address concerns over dangerous plastic surgery operations and crack down on clinics with a history of poor and hazardous treatment. The bill, SB 732, will be heard by the state Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Health and Human Services and is intended to cut down on medical malpractice caused by plastic surgeons. Most recently, a story made national news when one plastic surgery clinic in Florida killed eight women after undergoing cosmetic procedures over a six year span.

SB 732 was introduced by Sen. Anitere Flores and has already been approved by the larger Health Policy Committee. The main purposes of the bill are to first block doctors from opening a new facility in Florida after a clinic is shut down due to medical malpractice. Second, the doctors that operate these clinics would be required to register with the Florida Department of Health. A companion bill, HB 933, was introduced by Representative Anthony Rodriguez and has already cleared the Health Quality Committee in the state House of Representatives. The House bill is also set to be heard next by the Health Care Appropriations Subcommittee.

Some nurse anesthetists registered in Florida have spoken out against the new proposed law, but the Florida Association of Nurse Anesthetists supports the overall legislation. Those with concerns are worried that this new proposed legislation will place additional restrictions on members of their profession. Lawmakers have promised to work with the group to address their concerns, but their main focus is on curtailing doctors that continue to commit medical malpractice in their state. Senator Flores noted that lawmakers and attorneys know who these doctors are, but the public does not currently have access to this information. By preventing medical malpractice practitioners from opening new establishments in Florida, the public will be protected from healthcare professionals that place money over the safety and wellbeing of their patients. Representative Rodriguez added that the proposed legislation will give the state Department of Health the tools they need to shut down these types of butcher shops across the state.

Plastic Surgery Medical Malpractice

It is estimated that nearly two million people undergo plastic surgery operations every year across the United States with another nine million people getting less invasive procedures to augment features, and Florida is one of the leading states for cosmetic surgery procedures nationwide. While many people do not consider plastic surgery and medical surgery to have the same level of risk, cosmetic surgery procedures can be just as dangerous, if not more, than other invasive surgeries. Victims of medical malpractice that occurs during plastic surgery procedures often suffer significant injuries, infections, deformities, and can even die as a result. If you believe that you have suffered medical malpractice during a cosmetic procedure in Florida, you need to talk to an experienced medical malpractice attorney today.
